Duke Ellington always wanted to push his music into the realm of "classical", creating some large scale works in that attempt (think "Black, Brown and Beige"). One of the amazing things about this album is how much he resisted trying to create Gershwin or Still wanna-be works but recorded a real jazz album that happened to have an orchestra as /5(10).

In Duke Ellington realized a longtime goal, to record some of his extended works using both a symphony orchestra and his regular big band. Included on this fine CD are the three movements of "Night Creature," the relatively brief "Non-Violent Integration," "La Scala," and an adaptation of Ellington 's "Harlem Air Shaft.
